After the bathtub prop bet was announced recently, we look at some of the most ridiculous, and in some cases dangerous, prop bets in poker history. After writing about the bathtub bet from Nick Divella this week, I decided to count down some of the most extreme prop bets in poker history. We reported a rumour last week of a very unadvisable prop bet in the making, which has now been taking place in an undisclosed location. Rich Alati is currently trying to spend 30 days in a pitch black bathroom with no human contact. If he does it he wins $100,000 from fellow poker player Rory Young at even money.

So, naturally, poker players have been known to love gambling — all kinds of gambling. Even sitting in a dark bathroom for a month straight. Professional poker players Rory Young and Rich Alati — for some reason — have entered into a wild prop bet that requires Alati to remain in a pitch dark bathroom for 30 days. One of the things that poker players often do to make things more interesting is to take part in unique prop bets that can sometime be outrageous, controversial, dangerous and extremely challenging. Rich Alati is keeping with tradition by making a $100,000 prop bet that only a professional poker player would be willing to try.

On Jan 8, Bill Perkins, the poker-loving entrepreneur, and Antonio Esfandiari had made a prop bet that required Esfandiari to lunge instead of walk for a period of 48 hours. Having taken up the challenge, Esfandiari lunged all over the hotel and was too tired and sore to visit the bathroom when he felt like doing so at the poker table.

Following rumors that another high stakes wager was about to go down, the other man involved, Rory Young, outlined the official details on November 29. Describing the terms to Pokernews, Young said that Alati has to stay locked in a bathroom with no light for 30 days.

Even Lodden Would Think It’s Crazy

If Alati can complete the task, he’ll pocket $100,000. If he can’t, Young will win $100,000. Elaborating on the wager, the latter said the idea was conceived during a heads-up cash game.

As he often does, Young initiated a game of Lodden Thinks. Devised by Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak after quizzing the enigmatic Johnny Lodden, Lodden Thinks requires players to make theoretical bids on various topics.

On this occasion, Young asked fellow poker pro Alati what his price would be to stay in complete darkness for 30 days straight. Having done some research on sensory deprivation, the Australian believes most people overestimate their ability to function without any light.

Despite evidence to the contrary, Alati was confident in his ability to tough it out. With the proposition set, both players agreed to escrow $5,000 in lieu of Alati actually taking on the challenge.

Fast-forward to November 21 and the American poker player found himself locked in a bathroom with no light trying to win $100,000.

Under the terms of the bet, Alati can have any food he wants but the deliveries will be randomized to ensure he doesn’t know how long he’s been locked away. Additionally, there is a bed, a shower and various spa products he can use.

The final stipulation is that Alati can’t use any drugs to help him get through the task and his movements will be tracked 24-hours-a-day by five night vision cameras.

Another Crazy Poker Prop Bet

For Young, the bet is a lock. Light is required to stimulate various hormones and chemical signals in the body, which makes surviving in complete darkness both physically and mentally taxing.

Despite the conditions being stacked against him, history has shown that poker players are capable of defying the odds when there’s money on the line. In 2008, Jay Kwik set up camp in a bathroom at the Bellagio in order to win money from Andrew Robl and Alec Torelli.

In keeping with poker’s tradition of weird and wonderful feats, the aforementioned Esfandiari won $50,000 from businessman Bill Perkins after lunging instead of walking for 48 hours.

However, in some cases, winning the bet is only half the battle. After agreeing a $2 million weight loss wager in 2014, Ted Forrest found himself in a battle to get his winnings from Mike Matusow.

On this occasion, Young and Alati appear to have put all the necessary provisions in place to ensure no one gets left in the dark when the latest poker prop bet comes to an end.

We may have got the name wrong in last week’s breaking news of the staggering $100k prop bet that will see a pro poker player spending 30 days and night in complete darkness and isolation – but the bet itself is happening as you read this…

It’s not Huck Seed as our sources first said, although he did apparently offer to do a $1million version of the bathroom challenge, but rather Rich Alati who has taken up fellow Vegas pro Rory Young’s challenge – and it’s a brutal one to say the least…

“The conditions are complete darkness, so no electronics, no light-emitting devices, no drugs of any kind,” Young told PokerNews’ Mo Nuwarrah.

With no way of knowing how much time has passed apart from the somewhat random food deliveries every 3 to 6 days, many think it’s impossible…

According to PocketFives.com, there are ‘five night-vision cameras broadcasting around the clock and the only privacy Alati gets is when he’s in the shower or the toilet cubicle. Alati’s family and a few select others have access to the feed’.

Although quite a few people have declared the bet dangerous, Alati’s sister included, Young explained:

“She tried very hard to get him to pull out and he wasn’t having it. She’s pretty worried”. He added: “I’m a firm believer in that there are two consenting adults and if it doesn’t do any harm to a third party, then it’s morally justifiable”.

Will Alati win the bet, or will he beg to be let out early? With only a Rubik’s Cube for company the clever money is on the latter – and Daniel Negreanu agrees…

“The other night, I get a phone call from a random number and it’s Huckleberry Seed. Long story short, he wants to do it for a million, but he wants much tougher conditions.”
